A Chromebook is a laptop using the Google operating system Chrome OS. That means the Chromebook runs entirely in a browser and that all data is not actually stored on the computer itself but in the cloud. This means that you do not need to make any backups. You do not install any programs on a Chromebook, but you use online applications (apps). Google has developed apps itself in which you can execute all the functions that you require. You can find and download even more apps in the Chrome Web Store. More information about the Google Chrome apps, can be found in the chapter “apps for Chrome”. Make sure that you have an internet connection when you are using the apps. There are also apps, which continue to work without an internet connection. The changes, which you make in an app without an internet connection, are automatically synced in the cloud as soon as the internet connection is active again.
Because all apps are online, they are automatically updated, which means that the Chromebook never becomes slow due to the installation of heavy-duty programs. The most recent software is used during these updates, making sure your Chromebook is resistant against viruses. . You don’t need to look any further yourself.
Is your Chromebook Defect? Don’t worry about losing information and data. All of your data and documents are stored in the cloud, which means that you have access to your data and documents on all of your devices. You can continue your work directly on another device. Have you lost your Chromebook? Simply block access to your account from this device using your Google Account. Easily share your data in the cloud with several people at the same time and easily work together on documents.

Chrome OS is the operating system of your Chromebook. Unlike regular notebooks, you work completely from the Chrome OS browser. You do not need to install any programs, you can in fact add all apps within your Google Account. Using your Google Account, you can easily add apps from the Chrome Web Store. Because your Chromebook runs on an online operating system, updates run automatically and you always get the most recent software, making sure your Chromebook is resistant against all viruses..
Everything is stored by Chrome OS in the cloud. Your apps and documents do not take up any data on your Chromebook as a result. This ensures that your Chromebook does not get slower as time goes by. By saving everything in the cloud, you have access to your documents and data from anywhere. You can therefore also sign in from other devices using your personal Google Account and continue to work. Because all apps run online and everything is stored in the cloud, you need an internet connection to ensure everything is working. Some apps can also be used offline and sync with the cloud as soon as a connection is reestablished with the internet.
By creating a Google Account, you gain access to the cloud and you can use the apps, which are provided by Google. You can also sign in from different devices, for example a smartphone or tablet. With your Google Account you are working in the cloud and you can gain access to all your documents and data from every device connected to the internet. This means that you will never need to make another backup and you cannot lose your data.
To create a Google Account, go to www.google.com/accounts/NewAccount.
The Google Chrome apps run in the web browser. This means that you generally need an internet connection to use these apps. You can also set some apps for offline use, whereby an internet connection is not necessary. In the case of offline use, the program is synced as soon as there is an internet connection.
|Google Drive||manage files, share them with other people, create shared folders|
|Google Documents||word processing, several people can work together on the same document|
|Google Spreadsheets||data processing, several people can work together on the same document|
|Google Slides||create presentations, several people can work together on the same document|
|Google Forms||for designing a trial, survey|
|Google Agenda||online agenda, can be linked with other people|
|Google Hangouts||send messages, video conferences|
To use Chrome OS, you need an internet connection, but this is not always possible. That is why most apps also have an offline function, but for some apps you have to specifically Indicate in your settings whether you wish to enable the offline functionality . For offline use, you are actually using up part of the memory of your Chromebook because you are no longer directly working in the cloud.
You can enable your Google Drive for offline use by changing the Google Drive settings. By doing this, you have access to your Google Drive files and you can edit them without having an internet connection. These files are synced with the cloud as soon as a connection with the internet is reestablished. When setting Google Drive for offline use, you need an internet connection. To do this, go to Google Drive and click Settings. Go to the ‘General’ tab and select Offline: sync Google Docs, Sheets, Slides & Drawings files to this computer, so that you can edit offline’.
Go to the Chrome Web Store to download the app for Google Drive. In the Web Store enter the search operation ‘Google Drive’ and click the ‘Add to Chrome’ button to add the application in question.
After you have downloaded the app and enabled the offline function, all documents from your Google Drive are stored on your Chromebook. This means you can access these documents even when you are not connected to the internet and you can also edit these documents. As soon as you are online again, these documents are automatically synced.
*Caution! Using Google Drive offline uses up the memory of your Chromebook. Your Chromebook may become slower as a result.
*Important! To use an application offline, it first has to be added to your Google Account. You will need an internet connection to do this!
Google Chrome offers a management console and support at an additional fee, specifically focussed on education. With the administrator console you can easily build and manage a network of Chromebooks and tablets. Using this network, the devices in a class, school or school environment are interconnected and you can also manage them together with one management console. You can therefore easily create user groups and pre-install and block apps.
Using Chrome OS work is done in the cloud. This means students can easily create projects together and work simultaneously on the same document. This way, students can also work together with teachers or ask teachers for help when completing homework assignments. As a result, communication between teachers and students is increased and students have access to more personal mentoring.
Servers, safety and updates do not need to be managed within the school, this is automatically taken care of by Google. This means less time is needed for maintaining your Chromebooks.
With Google Classroom you can create a digital environment in which teachers and students can work together. You create user groups per class or subject, hand out assignments to students and give feedback in real time. The use of Classroom has all kinds of advantages:
